House Play

Two houses past the house that burned there is a quiet little blue house. The front yard is small and there is barely any room on either side of it. The gravel ruts but up to the paved driveway of the next-door neighbor on the other side. I remember meeting two of the little girls that used to live there playing in their yard. It’s been vacant for a while now, with just a for sale sign to keep it company. I peeked in the window the other day just to satisfy my curiosity. Then, I had to walk around and look in all of the windows and even through the fence.

What would it be like to live in this house? The main room in the house was long and narrow with laminate flooring and quaint fireplace. The front room was a small bedroom with dark brown shag carpet. The white trim looked crisp against the oatmeal painted interior walls. The exterior looked like it could use a new coat of paint, but the interior looked good. The backyard was packed full of surprises for such a small house and tiny lot: a sunken-in pool, kid’s playground, and a shed!

Looking at the property, I tried to imagine what it would be like to live there. Sadly, it is not right for our needs, but I can see a happy little family filling it joy. The House on Fire

We heard the sirens when it happened. They were close enough that we stepped outside to see what was going on. I remembered the loud popping noise I’d heard right before the sirens and guessed that it must be a fire. We didn’t see flames and the fire trucks were near, but not at our door so we went on about our evening.

The next day while on my walk around the neighborhood, I found the house—what was left of it. It was a Saturday morning, so garage sales are common. At first that’s what I thought it was with all of the people standing in the yard, until I realized all of the stuff was black from soot. As I came closer I noticed the woman with “Volunteer” across the back of her shirt bringing out one item at a time, slowly emptying the house. The man who lived there was standing on the sidewalk stunned, poking at his stuff. I heard a couple talk to him about what their church could offer. I saw him by the bus stop a few days later. The house is for sale now, fire damage and all.

He said the fire started in the bedroom and that’s where most of his things were. What wasn’t burned was ruined by the water or the smoke. The Housing and School Conundrum

I used to live in a duplex about three blocks from my current house. They moved from there to a loft in a big remodeled industrial building near downtown. After four years of loft living, they are again looking for grass–preferably in a good school district.

That’s right, it’s time for the kid to go to kindergarten and the hip inner-city vibe isn’t nearly as attractive. Housing Limbo

The situation sounds crazy: a guy is offered the job of his dreams if he moves to a tiny backwater town in another state. The catch? He’s getting married and not only does she not have a job or job prospect in said tiny town, but she owns a house and needs to keep her current job to pay the mortgage. This is the limbo my friends have been in for two years. They finally married last spring, even though they still lived in separate states.

This month it finally happened. Her house sold. She’ll be quitting her job here, finally, and making the big move. They’ve been splitting their time on weekends and setting up a new “together” house in the new city all in preparation of this day. It’s going to be a big adjustment for her, but definitely worth it. It seems crazy that a slow housing market held them in limbo for such a long time.

There’s more to this happy ending. That project that he left town for two years ago was just nominated for an Oscar. True story! How is the housing market affecting you? House Wishing

My sister called me today to tell me about a house she looked at this weekend. She lives in a pretty plush suburb outside of the big city, yet she keeps calling to tell me about her crime statistics and limited school choices. As an inner-city dweller, I’m probably not the best person for her to complain to, but I listen. The house that she just looked at is even further out, in an unincorporated area. One should know that an annuity is a sum of money awarded to a person and is set aside to be paid out in one lump sum, at a later date. Epic Walk

Today was the perfect end to my week of musings on the weather. It was sunny and hardly even cold, very pleasant. I tried to be outside as much as possible today. Little baby was feeling fine, so we played in the sunshine in the yard in the morning and went on an epic walk in the afternoon. The dog was put out in the backyard and the baby was situated in the stroller with toys and snacks. We were off!

In about a mile, maybe a mile and a half, we reached the park. It was alive with the buzz and shrieks of children. We found the baby swing and added our own set of delighted squeals to the mix. After the swing, we checked out the baby slide, then back to the swing. It was great to see so many kids and moms. We ate a small snack then headed off around the park. On the way home, we took a detour and stopped by the local coffee shop for another break, snack, and caffeine injection. Finally, we headed home.

In all, we were gone two and half hours and walked at least 3 miles. I always brag that our neighborhood is wonderfully walkable and that’s part of why I love it. A Better Day?

Since I’ve been writing about the weather this week, I’ll continue on that theme today. The ground was still soaked and spongy from the rain with big swaths of mud in the yard and lapping over the sidewalk in places. I gathered up the baby and dog and headed out for an extended walk to coincide with naptime.

It was sunny and bright and brisk but not too breezy. It would have been perfect, except… we were on this walk to escape a problem. Darling baby had been vomiting since early in the morning. I spoke with the doctor and everything is fine; it’s just a stomach virus. But a day’s worth of vomit and worry were taking their toll. A relaxing long walk to lull her to sleep and re-energize myself was just what I needed. I came prepared with a hand towel just in case, but I was hoping she would be so exhausted she would just sleep, which she did. I was relieved.

She woke up just as we were approaching the house after an hour-long walk. So while it may have looked like we were happily on a walk on a beautiful day, I was actually carrying close my sick baby and watching her sleep. Looks can be deceiving.
